Hi

Character Wipe and Beta

To clear it out - we are in the beta phase.
Beta means "test phase" or "not finished game with not 100% of all
base rules implemented".

If we leave beta phase and enter 1.0 (release game status), all chars
will be reseted to level 1. All stats will be reset, all items DELETED.
You will start as you just created the character!

Before people start to argu about it - it WILL be done. Its needed
from technical but also from game play view - or the game will
become broken and out of balance. Point.

I will ignore all "don't do it" or "please don't wipe 100%, do..." posts.
The char wipe was always announced and its a normal behaviour
when a game leaves beta EXCEPT its explicit announced as special.

Time of the Wipe
The reset will come with 60% chance its late 2006 (around xmas) but with
100% chance its somewhere 2007 - so its still a long time.

Donations

The donation items are given back in the way, that they are reseted and
REGIVEN after the wipe. If you got a "mega donation present" the present
is given to you a 2nd time then (i will archive all donations). Please note:
They are really regiven with a 2nd chance. If your donation item gave
you the first time a nice rod and the armour too - the 2nd time perhaps
it will not drop. If you don't get any good item - you has then a 2nd
chance.

Tell me why is needed and good

The simplest non technical answer is a game play element:
We don't have an real working ingame economy with trade skills at this
point of the game. The economy is loot driven.

Trade skills are not only alot of fun and important - they are also the
hardest thing in a mmorpg to setup and balance. Because simple
failures leads fast to a broken economy.

At this time, the high levels chars have accumulated so much of the
base items like scrolls, potions but also weapons that every trade skill
system will be killed.

Sorting that out will simply not work. A wipe is the only chance to bring
it in balance. Also: In 1.0 you will NOT be able to stuff 1.000.000 items
in your apartment. At this moment we have apartment which are saved
around 500kb to 1mb in size! Thats crazy. I terms of possible ingame
money (in beta 2 there dropped some now very expensive rares far
to often and some high levels have collected alot of them) but also
in server load - this big apartments eats memory.

In 1.0 or even before, every container and spot in a apartment has
an bulk value - only some items can dropped there independend to
the weight.

Well, thats only one point - there are tons more.

The wipe was discussed in some older threads. Some examples:

Release 1.0 is expected that soon? Very cool. (People will say 'yeah but look at all the postponements/delays to b4!' The basic answer is b4 is a special case and will provide some enhancements that will allow faster release of future version -- auto-updating client, for example)

I basically understand the necessity of a char wipe, and even if it wasn't necessary I think it's a damn good idea. Limiting the capacity of apts is good too -- but to balance this, will it be possible to buy more than one apy?

Addtional apt(s):  if you have an apt in stoneglow, you could also have one in stonehaven, one in Illuma, etc.   I'm half looking forward to the wipe.  Yes, I'll lose a LOT of great gear, but there'll be so much more and better stuff to find, new skills to learn, mistakes I can correct.  Plus professions will be available allowing even more options.  I know I've pushed my apt storage capacity on more than a few occassions, but in anticipation of the limitations, I have been methodically clearing it out.  For those that think well, I'm gonna lose everything in the wipe so it's not worth it, it is worth it.  Without us to test it and find bugs so they can be fixed, it won't progress nearly as much.  The wipe is still roughly a year or more away.  That is another year to learn, contribute to making 1.0 even better with suggestions and new map submissions, new arches (mobs and items), and new skills.  Plus we can make the best community ever, then when 1.0 comes all would be ready.  Those of us playing now will have the benefit of experience after the wipe even if our chars are totally new.  That will also open up more roleplaying opportunities....just because your char acted one way in Beta, doesn't mean your new char has to act exactly the same.

I think MT's post implies a yes to this question, but just to be sure. Will our char names be preserved and protected?

IOW will I be able to log in as Smacky and find a blank char with 0 exp, unaltered stats, and even of undecided race, or will some #@&!er be able to steal the name if I'm not quick enough?

So, when we get to alpha 1.0 or watever, will that be it, THE END! Or will there be further additions of maps/items/races etc?

There will be additions/improvements after 1.0, there just won't be major rewrites like B4.  1.0 will have *most* of the things MT wants for the game included.  Tweaks, new maps/items, etc will still be added.  More time will be available for expansion as less coding will be needed.  Just because it's going 1.0 and being released doesn't mean the work stops.  Just keeping up with evolving technology will keep the work going.  Now 64bit processors are becoming more available.  It'll be what 5-10 years until 128bit comes along?  If the goal was to get to 1.0 then give up on it, what would be the sense of doing it in the first place?

there will probably be at least 1 or 2 more....we'll know them by the major changes being added...like professions/trade skills, etc.  There will also be quite a few minor changes/tweaks added throughout the course between the major changes.

I won't mind the wipe that much because:
1. I'm not that high-level anyway
2. I can change my stats to something I would prefer.
Dwarrior may have returned while you weren't looking.

wow so much to absorb... so many links visited concerning the project.  well I suppose that I am looking forward to the various changes... It is like hey we have a new game for you to play with... when it is reset and V.1 well ok that is the way it is... I have never before Daimonin been able to play one single game for more than a few months before I lost interest so with my $30.00 donation I figure that I am about $80. ahead of the game and giving a small donation to insure that this really good game is still around is just nothing.  Thanx to the DEV team, MT and anyone that has taking the time and effort to add to the game...

There is none other.

I  second Smacky's post about having a level 0 character ready when 1.0 rolls around, or at least give me first chance to use my name before somebody else gets it.  But if not, no biggie...

The whipe will make it so that all website registrants are whiped as well as ingame whiped. So pretty much we will be a new game, as said before. Now, as far as saving usernames, here is how the rock will fall there:

1) The ingame characters' names and passwords will be saved and characters reduced to level 1, etc etc., and the website slates will be whiped clean
2) Registering on the website with the same name as one of the beta character names will require the same password as ingame for 2 months after 1.0. This means that if someone tried register as Finlos or Unislash right after the whipe to try to get some quick authority, they would also have to have the same password that i use ingame today to be registered (and they would also get a nice talk with me--and on that note, don't try to impersonate a dev, ever).

Cheers,
